The Human Brand
The Argument
Attention got cheap. Trust got scarce.
Logos, campaigns, positioning, tone of voice. All of it now made in seconds, for nothing.
Trust can't attach to an abstraction. It needs someone who carries the consequence of being wrong.
So brand equity is relocating to named, accountable people. Not a tactic but a strategic decision about where the difference now lives in a world where trust is on the line.
Twenty years building brands. Across broadcast media, creative agencies, brand boardrooms.
My name is on this. I'll still be here if I was wrong.
The Evidence
This didn't start with AI.
61%
Of US TV and video ad money is digital video. Linear takes 39%. Media spend landscape has flipped.
49.9%
Of creator spend goes to nano and micro accounts. Up from a fifth. The shift is to specific interest media creation.

New Strava clubs in 2025. Running clubs grew three and a half times. People want people. A strong move to IRL human interaction showing globally across different communities.
73%
Of senior buyers learn more from published thinking than from marketing. It’s not just products, features and claims. People want to understand the intellect behind what they buy.
Four separate tracks all pointed the same way. People became important, again. Institutional trust fell.

Attention and Trust
Attention attaches to brands. Trust attaches to people.
The scarcity was never attention. It was content. Content stopped costing anything. It can sound right; the difficult thing is knowing what to act on. That is trust: the willingness to act on what is communicated.
You can't control the customer journey any more. They assemble their own route. You can only be trusted when someone arrives.
Brand Strategy
Brand strategy has always been anthropomorphism.
Archetype · Personality · Character · Voice · Values
Every strategic call, a human word.
Mass product distribution took the founder / maker out of the brand building equation. Brand was built to stand in for the human that could not be distributed.
Every strategic brand framework since has been a way to emulate, at scale, the human distinctiveness of an actual person.
Marketing teams with layers of sign off dilute distinctiveness. Anything AI produced will send you to the statistically most likely. The version that works belongs to an actual named person.
The Pattern
Every era makes something free. Then value moves.
Agriculture — made food abundant.
The steam engine — made force abundant.
Electricity — made energy abundant.
Computing — made logic abundant.
AI — makes the pursuit of an outcome abundant.
When pursuing an outcome is free, selecting the outcome is everything.
Execution was the craft layer. Its price has collapsed. Selection can't be installed — it belongs to people.
The Mechanism
People don't trust CEOs. They trust their CEO.
Business → My employer
64 → 78
Their own employer: the most trusted institution measured anywhere.
CEOs → My CEO
48 → 61
Familiarity is worth about thirteen points.
And the premium is growing. A fixed bias does not move. This moved.
Exposure used to be expensive. Now it's free and it accrues faster to a person: a person builds a record, a logo only builds impressions.

Anyone Can Sound Right
Only a person can be wrong.
46%
Trust a brand less once they find out AI handled what they thought a person did.
4×
More likely that visible AI costs a brand trust than builds it.
The damage isn't the work. It's the discovery. And it works backwards.

Authenticity
A claim about an interior state. Untestable — and anything performable is now generatable.
Accountability
A name attached, a position that can be proven wrong, and the person still there afterwards.
Once someone knows, they reassess everything that came before it. So if AI is in use there needs to be visible human authority front and centre in how the brand shows up.
The Gap
Your buyers already moved. Nobody moved with them.
86%
Of decision-makers say published thinking gets an unfamiliar company into a tender.
38%
Of the people producing it expect it to get them invited to anything.
60%
Would pay a premium to work with an organisation that publishes serious thinking.
70%
Of C-suite have questioned a supplier after reading a competitor's ideas.
Doing the work and representing the work are different skills. Most have the first. Brand strategy becomes about finding, structuring and sharpening the judgement a person already carries but has not found a platform to showcase.

The Last Thing That Can't Be Copied
The last thing that can't be copied.
But if you were starting a business today, knowing what the last three years have done to logos, campaign and products — where would you put the difference?
Brand will always be the difference between your customers choosing you or not. Now that difference is, YOU.
